What the chapter is about

Our school is a happy place because it is more than a building: it is where we learn, play, make friends and grow. Teachers guide us, friends support us, and every corner — classroom, library, playground — has a purpose.

A happy school is clean, safe and kind. Children follow rules, respect each other, keep the school clean, and help anyone who needs it.

The chapter asks us to notice the people who keep the school running: teachers, the headteacher, helpers, the librarian, and the gardener. Everyone's work matters.

A happy school also listens to children. When children can say what they need — a quiet corner to read, a safe place to play, a friend to talk to — the school becomes a place they want to come to every morning.

What you should learn

Think of your school as a community: who does what, and how does each person's work help you learn?

Key Terms

  • Community — People living or working together.
  • Respect — Treating others with care and politeness.
  • Responsibility — Doing your own duty well.
  • Library — A room of books for reading and study.
  • Playground — An open area for games and exercise.
  • Assembly — A gathering of the whole school, usually in the morning, for prayer, news and announcements.

Remember

  • School is for learning, playing and friendship.
  • A happy school is clean, safe and kind.
  • Rules protect everyone.
  • Every worker in school matters.

Exam Tip / Common Mistake

Common mistake: describing only the building. Good answers mention people — teachers, friends, helpers — and values like kindness and cleanliness.

Think and try

Name one person in your school whose work you rarely notice — a helper, a gardener, a librarian. What would your school day look like without that person's work? Write two lines of thanks for them.
