Earth: Our Shared Home — EG's own notes, in simple words
Book: Our Wondrous World (CBSE, Class 5) | Chapter 10 | Medium: English

Diagram (labels are printed on the image): Earth with trees and clean water. A general teaching picture about our shared home.

Children planting saplings. A general picture about protecting Earth.
What the chapter is about
The Earth is our shared home: one planet for all people, animals and plants. It gives us air, water, food and shelter, and it is the only home we have.
Our home is in danger from pollution, cutting of forests, and wasting water and energy. Smoke dirties the air, plastic chokes rivers, and garbage piles up in cities.
Protecting the Earth is everyone's job: plant trees, save water, use less plastic, keep surroundings clean, and reuse things. Small acts by many people make a big change.
Protecting the Earth also means protecting other living things. When a forest is cut, animals lose homes; when a river is dirtied, fish suffer. Every action that helps the Earth also helps the creatures who share it with us.
What you should learn
Every problem in this chapter has a matching action: pollution → plant trees; plastic → use cloth bags; waste → reduce, reuse, recycle.
Key Terms
- Pollution — Dirtying air, water or land.
- Recycle — Making new things from old waste.
- Deforestation — Cutting down forests.
- Shared home — The Earth belongs to all living things.
- Environment — Our surroundings: air, water, land, living things.
- Habitat — The natural home of a plant or animal, where it finds food, water and shelter.
Remember
- Earth is our only home.
- Pollution, deforestation and waste harm it.
- Plant trees, save water, use less plastic.
- Reduce, reuse, recycle.
Exam Tip / Common Mistake
Common mistake: writing only problems. Good answers pair each problem with an action — that is what 'protecting Earth' means.
Chart / Table: Problems and actions
| Problem | Action |
|---|---|
| Air pollution | Plant trees |
| Plastic waste | Use cloth bags |
| Water waste | Close taps, reuse water |
| Garbage | Segregate and recycle |
Think and try
Choose one promise for this week: save water, use a cloth bag, or plant a seed. Write it down and tick it each day you keep it. At week's end, what was easiest and what was hardest?
Practice set — try it yourself
- Why is Earth called our shared home?
Hint: Think about all living things. - Name three dangers to the Earth.
Hint: Think about pollution, forests, waste. - What does 'reduce, reuse, recycle' mean?
Hint: Think about less waste. - How can you save water and electricity?
Hint: Think about daily habits. - Write a promise to protect the Earth in four lines.
Hint: Start with what you will do.
How to use this page: Read the summary, say the Key Terms in your own words, then try the practice set without looking. Ask your teacher or parent to check your answers.
